Ancestory is a visual exploration of family history and whitewashing within the broader context of American origin stories. Black and Indigenous Americans, and American of Color, have always wrestled with the legacies of racism and colonization. But like many white American families, race and social hierarchy are omitted from the stories that I heard about my ancestors growing up. As the US continues to renegotiate its own origin story, I’m curious what and how my family chooses to remember. How can graphic design be used to examine, acknowledge, and prompt reflection on the ways white supremacy and whitewashing shape my family’s histories and how I tell them? Who or what is missing? How do we tell ourselves who we are? And what do we make public?
