Graphic Rumination is a systematic approach to graphic design. This is a personal design methodology inspired by animal rumination. Cattle, sheep, goats and other ruminant animals digest food in multiple compartments rather than in a single stomach. The term “rumination” also refers to a slow, deep thought. My methodology “digests” photographs to extract different graphic “nutrients” in order to derive new forms. As a designer, observer, and science nerd, I enjoy creating design elements through a nonlinear yet methodical process. If design could look outward into existing systems that have worked for centuries, what might we gain? By having our own design systems, as graphic designers, we can maybe find a better standpoint to position ourselves in this constantly evolving creative world.
